VAN 2, STL 1, 10/18/2016

The Canucks have been a surprise early this year and they kept the ball rolling on Tuesday night by defeating the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in overtime. It’s still early and this is only one game, but I was pretty surprised with what I saw out of this game from both sides. Vancouver matches up pretty poorly with St. Louis pretty poorly in terms of depth, but they handled the Blues very well this game, limiting them offensively and completely shutting them down in the neutral zone. The Sedin line and top defense pairing of Alex Edler & Chris Tanev had a big part in this, but the second line of Brandon Sutter, Markus Granlund & Jannik Hansen also did a nice job this game.

Next to the Sedins, this line was producing most of Vancouver’s offense (ironically their only 5v5 goal came from the third line) and did some damage to the Blues off the rush. Sutter in particular was pretty noticeable here and forced St. Louis’ defense to back off a few times, leading to some good looks for the Canucks. The Blues held a lead for most of the game and completely blanked the Canucks on four power play opportunities, but they had a pretty underwhelming night at even strength. Hitchock had to change his lines around quite a bit and the Berglund line was the only unit generating anything consistently. Tarsenko also had a pretty impressive game, leading the Blues in shots but he was doing most of that on his own, carrying his line with Alex Steen & David Perron.

It’s only one game and it wasn’t the result I anticipated, but an interesting game to breakdown nonetheless.
